Testimonial

Zak Mahamed is a long distance runner who was part of the Sport Excellence Programme last year. In 2024/25 he benefited from the Turing Funding twice: first training in Morrocco, and now as a graduate he has just completed six months training in Ethiopia.

"My training period in Ethiopia and Morocco was one of the most important experiences of my athletic career. Being able to immerse myself in two of the world’s strongest long-distance running cultures pushed me physically and mentally to new levels. Training at altitude, meeting dedicated athletes, and learning from different coaching styles helped me understand what it takes to perform at an elite level.

This experience also allowed me to grow as a person. Living and training abroad taught me discipline, resilience, and independence. I was able to focus fully on my sport while representing Solent University and gaining valuable international exposure.

I am grateful to that the Turing Scheme managed by the International Office and the funding provided has given me the opportunity to develop in a world-class environment, and I would highly recommend the programme to other student-athletes who want to challenge themselves and take their performance to the next stage."
