Don Iro Appointed Pro-Chancellor

As Southampton Solent celebrates its 20th year of university status, Don Iro has been appointed as a Pro-Chancellor, marking a historic milestone as he becomes the first person outside the role of Chair of the Board of Governors to take on the position.

Currently serving as Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors, Don brings a wealth of experience and deep personal ties to the university. His journey with Solent began in 2004 when he arrived in the UK from Nigeria as an international student. He went on to graduate with a BEng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering in 2007. In 2019, he was appointed an independent governor at the university.

The honorary role of Pro-Chancellor carries a high-level ambassadorial function, representing the university at ceremonial events, presiding over degree ceremonies, and engaging with key stakeholders regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Don is a seasoned entrepreneur and executive, with a global career spanning digital and IT services, supply chain, and logistics. His leadership roles have included positions in the private and public sectors across the UK, Asia, Middle East, and Africa.

Beyond business, Don serves as a non-executive director for Ashford & St Peter's NHS Foundation Trust and has previously held several community leadership roles, including vice-chair of Bishops Waltham Council and chair of its Finance, Policy and Resources Committee. He is also actively involved in policing oversight, diversity advocacy, and mentorship.

Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent, Professor James Knowles, said:

“Don’s appointment as Pro-Chancellor reflects both his deep commitment to Solent and his outstanding contributions across multiple sectors.

“His journey, from student to his significant role with the university today, is a powerful testament to Solent’s values of opportunity, ambition, and transformation.”

Don’s appointment is expected to enhance the university’s profile and further its mission of inclusive, forward-looking leadership as it celebrates its anniversary and begins working towards its 2035 goal of being the leading practice-led university in the country.
