Solent is now a Training Delivery Partner for Guide Dogs UK

22 May 2025

We are delighted to announce that Solent is now a Training Delivery Partner of Guide Dogs UK, one of the UK’s leading sight loss charities.

Guide Dogs UK provide a wide range of services- with and without dogs! - to support people living with a vision impairment, and are the only organisation to breed and train guide dogs in the UK.

Guide Dogs UK are also the largest employer of specialists dedicated to helping children and young people overcome the challenges of sight loss.

Disability Advice Team Leaders from the University’s Disability Advice Team will deliver community sighted guide training for staff and students, which includes awareness of sight conditions, and practical sighted guiding techniques. Anyone interested in attending should keep an eye on the portal events for future sessions as they are planned. Please note that all participants must be aged 18+.

The aim of this training is to increase the number of people who know how to sighted guide and grow awareness and understanding of sighted guiding across the UK, helping to build a more inclusive society- and campus- for people with vision impairments. Our shared ambition is to reframe sighted guiding as a vital skill, and we greatly value this collaboration.

Research by Guide Dogs UK has shown that people with sight loss feel less confident asking for help from strangers and more anxious about how they are perceived by others. Taking just a few moments to help someone with sight loss can transform their experience—turning a day into one where they live the life they choose, rather than wishing they had stayed home.

We look forward to welcoming members of our University community in future training sessions.
