Additional hardship funding from Office for Students

Read about the additional hardship funding for students and find out how you can apply.

The Office for Students has provided the University with additional hardship funding to support students at this difficult time. We have looked at areas of greatest need and will be allocating the funds as follows:

Digital bursary

£400 towards the cost of a laptop or other equipment. If you don’t have access to the technology you need, or your laptop/device is broken or faulty, please apply for this award.

Eligibility criteria

  • UK students.
  • Undergraduate.
  • Postgraduate (previously in receipt of full loan entitlement for undergraduate studies).

Evidence required

  • Student loan entitlement from SFE.
  • Supporting statement (please see additional information below).

Please note if you were awarded the Solent University Technology Bursary in 2020 you cannot apply for this award.

Apply for the digital bursary

Broadband bursary

If you are struggling to access the broadband connectivity that you need, please apply for this award of £200 to help towards the monthly costs of broadband access for 4-6 months.

Eligibility criteria

  • We will prioritise courses who need to access MyPC to be able to use the software required for their course as advised by the course leader.
  • UK students.
  • EU/international applications will be considered via the International support grant (please see below).
  • Undergraduate.
  • Postgraduate (previously in receipt of full loan entitlement for undergraduate studies).
  • Priority will be given to those students who receive the full SFE loan entitlement (household income of less than £25,000).

Evidence required

  • Supporting statement (please see additional information below).
  • Full loan entitlement statement from SFE.

Apply for the broadband bursary

Hardship grant (Covid-19)

This fund is for students who are struggling with the impact of Covid-19 due to a change in circumstance or other pressures such as caring responsibilities. We encourage students who are parents with children at home to apply for this grant as well as students who are struggling with rent, or lack of pay due to the pandemic. £500 will be awarded to each successful applicant.

Eligibility criteria

  • UK students.
  • Undergraduate or postgraduate.

Evidence required

  • Evidence of income and expenditure.
  • Supporting statement (your application will be assessed on this).
  • Student Finance.
  • Evidence of regular engagement on the course (eg, a printout of your personal SOL usage).

Apply for the Covid-19 hardship grant

International support grant (Covid-19)

This money is allocated to international Solent students, based in the UK and studying in the academic year 2020/21, who are suffering significant financial hardship as a result of the pandemic and can be used for exceptional circumstances. This might include travel costs for students who wish to be at home with their families at this difficult time, for example, students who are no longer able to fund their studies in the UK due to the impact of the pandemic, basic living costs for students whose families are struggling to support them or unplanned visa costs.

Eligibility criteria

  • International students based in the UK.
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate.

Evidence required

  • Evidence of income and expenditure.
  • Supporting statement (your application will be assessed on this).
  • Evidence of regular engagement on the course (eg, a printout of your personal SOL usage).

Please see below for advice on writing your supporting statement. Please ensure your supporting statement includes the following information:

  • Why you applying for this award.
  • How Covid-19 impacted on your situation (eg, finances, access to IT).
  • How you meet the full eligibility criteria.
  • What difference this award will make to your studies.
  • Any personal circumstance you feel are relevant.

Apply for the Covid-19 international support grant

Rent support bursary

This fund is for students who are struggling with the impact of Covid-19 on paying rent on their student flat or house. The grant is available to all students who are struggling with ongoing costs associated with rent payments.

Eligibility criteria

  • UK students.
  • Undergraduate or postgraduate.

EU/international applications will be considered via the international support grant.

Evidence required

  • A copy of your rental agreement (or contract) evidencing amount of rent paid per month.
  • Supporting statement (please see additional information, below).

Please note: if you do not supply the required evidence, we will not be able to consider your application.

Parents student bursary

This fund is for students with children who are struggling with the impact of Covid-19 on family finances. The grant is available to all students who are struggling with the costs of having to support children through Covid-19.

Eligibility criteria

  • UK students.
  • Undergraduate or postgraduate.

EU/international applications will be considered via the international support grant.

Evidence required

  • Student Finance England learning allowance statement OR child benefit statement.
  • Supporting statement (please see additional information, below).
