Solent Sanctuary Week 2023

Get involved with Solent Sanctuary Week - commencing Monday 13 March

27th February 2023

As part of our commitment to becoming a University of Sanctuary we will be launching our inaugural Solent Sanctuary Week, commencing Monday 13 March 2023. The week will provide a range of events and activities which we hope will bring together students, staff, and external organisations to better understand and tackle a range of topics associated with Sanctuary in the UK.

The programme for the week currently includes:

Monday 13 March: My Fair Share Too

TS501, the Spark, 12:45-2pm

To launch Sanctuary week, we are proud to be exclusively showing ‘My Fair Share Too’ - a short film devised and created by World Stages Now and produced and directed by students at Solent studying on BA (Hons) Film Studies and Film Production courses. Based on real-life stories and lived experiences of those seeking sanctuary in Southampton, the film looks at how truth is acutely personal, and in what ways cultural perspectives influence and inform the need to find avenues to understand each other’s truths to address what is a fair share.

Friday 17 March: Hostile

Digital Cinema, 12-2pm

To conclude our programme of events, we are pleased to welcome Director Sonita Gale and her award-winning feature length documentary 'Hostile' to Solent University for the very first time. Hostile tells the stories of those most affected by the policies adopted to make the UK a hostile environment for immigrants.

There are still many ways that you can still get involved during the week and we would love to hear about any current work you may be delivering which involves working with people seeking sanctuary and/or ideas for additional activities.

Please contact the communities development team via engagement@solent.ac.uk to discuss opportunities to get involved.
