Solent University celebrates Black History Month

Solent University celebrates Black History Month with a series of events to mark the contribution and achievements of the city's black community this October.

20th September 2024
General

This year’s theme for Black History Month is “Reclaiming Narratives,” and marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture.

This theme underscores a commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage. It’s about taking control of stories and honouring heroes while challenging the narratives that have often overlooked the contributions and achievements of Black individuals both in the UK and globally. #ReclaimingNarratives

Solent University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor James Knowles, says: “Our University thrives thanks to our vibrant and diverse communities of students and staff, and our strong partnerships with the communities we serve in and around the city.”

“We are partnering with local organisations to celebrate Black History Month and will continue to grow and develop these relationships – working to address the local needs and opportunities that will shape the future of Southampton and beyond.”

Black History Month Launch

The University will be attending and exhibiting at the Black History Month South 2024 launch on Monday 23 September, 11am to 2pm, at St Mary’s Fire Station. The event, led by Solent Honorary Doctor Don John, will feature guest speaker, the esteemed Festus Akinbusoye, the first black Police & Crime Commissioner. As a prominent figure in community leadership and an advocate for social justice, Mr. Akinbusoye will bring invaluable insights and reflections on the importance of reclaiming and reshaping the narratives that define Black history and identity in Britain.

Black Business, Art and Music Festival (BBAM)

On Sunday 28 September (11am to 7pm), Solent is delighted to be partnering with Southampton’s BBAM festival being held at Guildhall square. The event, led by Doctor Abdoulie Sanneh and The United Voices of African Associations (TUVAA), features street art, poetry, music, food, fashion, and businesses. The Widening and Participation team will be in attendance showcasing the wealth of fantastic opportunities available at Solent.

Colourism Exhibition

Throughout October, Solent is delighted to be exhibiting in collaboration with Black History Month South a new display of photographic art called ‘Colourism’. Showing in The Spark Building, this exhibition aims to explore Colourism/Shadism, which has had a more profound impact on life and culture than many presume and hopes to stimulate further discussion to create a greater understanding.
