World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is observed annually on September 10th, organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP). Suicide is a serious global issue, with one in every 100 deaths worldwide being a result of suicide. Each of these deaths is a profound tragedy that affects many others. However, by raising awareness, reducing stigma, and taking informed actions, we can help reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts around the world.

This year’s theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with a focus on the call to action: “Start the Conversation.” This theme highlights the importance of talking openly about suicide, breaking down the barriers of silence, and encouraging individuals to share their feelings without fear of judgment. Conversations about suicide can be difficult, but they are essential and can make a life-saving difference.

How You Can Make a Difference

As students, you have a unique opportunity to support your peers by learning how to start conversations about suicide. To help you, we encourage you to take advantage of the free online suicide prevention training available. This training offers practical advice on how to approach these sensitive discussions with empathy and confidence. By completing this training, you’ll be better equipped to support those who may be struggling, potentially saving lives.

Reaching out to a friend, asking if they are okay, and offering non-judgmental support can make all the difference. Often, people in distress aren’t looking for specific solutions; they simply need someone to listen with compassion. For more guidance, please refer to the NHS resources.

Resources and Support

There are several resources available to you, whether you need help yourself or want to support someone else. The Samaritans provide crucial advice on recognizing the signs that someone may be struggling, what steps to take, and how to care for yourself during these challenging conversations.

  • Samaritans
    • If you need immediate help, you can contact the Samaritans at 116 123 (free phone). They offer a 24-hour service available every day of the year. If you prefer writing down your feelings or are worried about being overheard on the phone, you can email them at jo@samaritans.org.
  • Solent Mind
    • Solent Mind provides advice and support for anyone experiencing a mental health problem.
  • University Mental Health and Wellbeing Team

  • Student Assistance Programme (SAP)

    • Amparo offers confidential emotional and practical support to individuals and families affected by suicide across several regions in the UK, including tailored assistance with legal matters, media inquiries, and connecting to local resources.
  • Papyrus
    • PAPYRUS is a UK charity dedicated to preventing young suicide, offering confidential support, resources, and practical advice through its HOPELINE247 service for those struggling with suicidal thoughts or concerned about someone else.
