Observing the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Friday 21 March

The University proudly supports the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Friday 21 March.

This day, established by the UN in 1966, commemorates the tragic Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa, where 69 peaceful protesters were killed on 21 March 1960. This event underscores the urgent need to combat racial discrimination globally.

Why It Matters

Racial discrimination continues to harm societies, individuals, and communities. This day reminds us of the ongoing struggle to eliminate racism and the importance of equal opportunities and protection for everyone, regardless of their racial or ethnic background.

Solent’s Commitment

At Solent, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for all. We actively work to ensure that every student, staff member, and visitor can thrive and succeed. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in our Six Pillars of Equality and Wellbeing, which guide our efforts to address inequality and promote positive outcomes for all.

Our Initiatives

  • BIPOC Staff Affinity Network: Established in 2019, this network supports Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour staff, promoting positive change through peer support and collective action. It also contributes to policy development and implementation at the University.
  • Race Equality Charter: In 2022, we achieved Bronze status of the Advance HE Race Equality Charter which recognises our efforts to create an inclusive environment for all. This charter helps us address barriers to the success of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic staff and students. Find out more here.
  • Training for staff on Equality & Diversity: All staff are encouraged to complete an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training module. Co-designed by AdvanceHE and our Education Office, this module is tailored specifically for Higher Education, providing sector-relevant development and helping us better understand and appreciate the diverse backgrounds and experiences that make up our university community.
  • University of Sanctuary status: Solent aims to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for all and welcomes people seeking sanctuary, including asylum seekers and refugees. Read more.

For Students

  • Solent Students' Union: The SU provides representation and a range of activities supporting students from all backgrounds. Find out more here.
  • Report and Support: Everyone has the right to feel safe and welcome at Southampton Solent University. If you or someone you know has experienced any incident of harmful behaviour and/or racial discrimination, we encourage you to report it confidentially so that we can offer support.
