Southampton Solent University celebrates 20 years of university status

26 June 2025

Southampton Solent University today (Thursday 26 June) celebrated the twentieth anniversary of being granted university status.

Solent received the landmark confirmation from the Privy Council at the start of July in 2005, marking its transformation to university status. Since then, the institution has grown significantly in stature, impact, and ambition – attracting a new generation of students and becoming a cornerstone of higher education in the South of England.

To commemorate the anniversary, Solent hosted a day of celebration on its East Park Terrace campus. The highlight was the prestigious STAR Awards, which recognised exceptional contributions by university staff, nominated by their peers for their dedication and impact.

Over the past two decades, Solent has seen more than 70,000 students graduate, many going on to make their mark across industries in the UK and beyond. The university has also become an integral part of the local community, achieving sanctuary status and embracing partnerships with local businesses, public services and sports teams.

The university’s commitment to teaching excellence was recognised with the award of TEF Gold status in 2023, affirming its reputation for delivering high-quality, practice-based education.

Solent’s transformation since 2005 is also reflected in its expanding campus and world-class facilities. Key developments include:

  • The Ship Handling Centre – a vital training resource for maritime professionals.
  • The Maritime Simulation Centre – part of a £43 million investment in cutting-edge maritime education.
  • The Spark building – a visually striking and modern learning environment that has become a central hub for students and staff.
  • New computer labs – with all the equipment and software needed to prepare the next generation of cyber experts.

Looking to the future, Solent recently unveiled the ambitious Vision 2035 strategy, which sets out a bold plan to become the UK’s leading university for practice-based learning over the next decade.

Solent University Vice-Chancellor, Professor James Knowles, said:

"This anniversary is not only a moment of reflection on how far we’ve come, but also a celebration of the vibrant community that makes Solent unique.

“As we look ahead to the next decade, we are more committed than ever to delivering transformative education that equips students for the real world."

Next week a public exhibition will open in the Spark, showcasing the evolution of the university from a School of Art to a thriving city centre institution. Members of the public are welcome to view the exhibition, curated by Solent’s own academic staff, and take a trip down memory lane.

With a clear roadmap for the future and a proud history behind it, Solent University is set to continue shaping the lives of students and the wider community for years to come.
