We are very proud to report that Solent's Level 5 BSc Sport Management students have collectively raised £2558 for charity by hosting a variety of sport related events and competitions in March 2025.
A group of 21 students divided themselves into 5 working groups to plan, implement and deliver practical, participant-oriented sport and physical activity events throughout their second year of study.
The planning process begins in Semester 1 and culminates with the live delivery of the events in March of Semester 2.
This year students opted to fundraise for the RNLI, Cancer Research UK, Centrepoint UK, No Limits Charity and Diabetes UK and organised fundraising events that engaged over 170 participants.
Events included an Underwater Hockey Exhibition, a Dodgeball Tournament, Five and Six-a-Side Football Tournaments and a YouTube content creator focused charity football game that was hosted at Sholing Football Club.
The fundraising activity is assessed and is a key feature of the Sport Management degree. Whilst the students work collectively together to stage the sporting events, they then complete an individual academic written reflection that draws on theoretical principles associated with successful sport event management.
This assessment task may sound reasonably straightforward, but in reality presents a myriad of challenges for the students. There are always changes to navigate, conflicts to resolve and learning how to work productively with groups external to the university community is also a learning challenge, whilst also providing opportunities to network.
Since 2023, the BSc Sport Management students have raised in excess of £5000 for local and national charities, and the complexity and creativity involved in designing these events is becoming more interesting to observe every year.
The Level 4 group is already scheming to out-fundraise the class of 2025 and we're looking forward to seeing what they come up with!
