A new way of teaching for new students from September 2026
We have started work on a long-term project that will shape the future of how courses are taught at Solent. This work supports our ambitions in the Solent 2035 Strategy and builds on what we’ve learned from students, staff and external partners.
As part of this, we are introducing a new approach to teaching, called ‘block teaching’, designed to give students more focused learning, clearer structures, and increased opportunities for feedback. Modules are taught in 6-week blocks, with one week for assessment.

This will be implemented for relevant Level 4 and some foundation courses from September 2026. These courses have been re-designed through collaborative sessions, and student partners have played an active role in shaping ideas, testing proposals and sharing honest feedback. Their contributions continue to influence decisions across the project.
No changes to your current course.
If you are already studying with us, your course, timetable and assessments will continue exactly as normal.
The new way of teaching will be introduced from September 2026, starting with Level 4 students and some foundation and Level 6 top-up courses.
You’re not missing out. Your current programme was designed differently, so we won’t be switching to the block approach partway through your studies (exceptions apply).
If you suspend your studies, are currently on a placement year, or need to repeat a year or module(s) and restart from September 2026, you may re-join a cohort that’s now following the updated way of teaching. For most courses, this will include block teaching.
If this applies to you, we’ll explain what’s changed and what it means for your learning before you return. We’ll make sure you have clear information and support so you can feel confident about re-joining your course.
If you have any questions about block teaching, please speak to your course leader.
