Cultural awareness is key to the international student experience and our recent British Meal event brought together home and international students to explore British traditions, behaviours, and values while reflecting on cultural expectations and the realities of culture shock.
Culture shock in food
One of the most engaging discussions focused on culture shock in food. Students shared their experiences of adapting to different cuisines, from encountering unexpected flavours to navigating British dining habits. Some were surprised by the popularity of gravy on chips, while others found the concept of a full English breakfast quite different from their own morning meals.
These conversations highlighted how food plays a major role in cultural adaptation and how something as simple as a meal can create both comfort and surprise in a new country.
A taste of British cuisine
To enhance the experience, students enjoyed a traditional British meal, featuring fish and chips, roast chicken with vegetables, and a vegetarian option. The meal was topped off with a delicious chocolate brownie for dessert.
Sharing food in a relaxed setting created the perfect environment for open discussions. It allowed students to bond over cultural differences while experiencing some of the UK’s most well-known dishes.
Fun and learning: The culture quiz
A fantastic quiz, prepared by our two international ambassadors, added an interactive and engaging element to the evening. While researching British culture for the quiz, the ambassadors thoroughly enjoyed learning new facts and gaining a deeper appreciation of UK traditions.
The quiz challenged students’ knowledge of British customs, sparking laughter, friendly competition, and deeper conversations. These moments made learning about cultural differences both fun and insightful.
Opportunities beyond the event
Beyond cultural discussions, students were introduced to volunteering and work opportunities at the Mela Festival in Southampton. Matt Sanger, a lecturer in BA courses, shared valuable insights on how students could get involved, whether through volunteering, gaining work experience, or simply attending to experience Southampton’s multicultural community.
This was a great reminder that cultural exchange isn’t just about conversations—it’s also about taking part in local events and broadening our horizons through real-life experiences. Watch the space as a talk with more details on got to get involved will be advertise in the event section of the portal shortly.
A memorable experience
The British Meal and Cultural Conversations event was a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in meaningful discussions, challenge their perspectives, and prepare for international experiences.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part—we look forward to more cultural exchanges in the future!
