Solent students celebrate success at the British Computing Society Women Lovelace Colloquium 2025

Two of Solent's MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence and Data Science students were accepted to accepted to present research posters at the prestigious BCS Women Lovelace Colloquium in April.

Two Solent students, Olubunmi Adenuga and Deborah Adedigba, submitted abstracts and were shortlisted to present their posters at this prestigious event, which received around 200 submissions. This alone is a remarkable accomplishment, highlighting their dedication and the quality of their work. The research topic was 'Using AI to make melanoma detection more equitable across all skin tones' and was supervised by Dr Raza Hasan and Dr Jarutas Andritsch.

Deborah (pictured above) won second place in the MSc Poster Category at the event and says. "I thank God for this achievement and am honoured to have won second place. I'm grateful to my supervisor Dr Raza Hasan, my tutor Dr Jarutas Andritsch, and Southampton Solent University for their support for my learning journey in healthcare technology that can make a meaningful difference.'

Such achievements not only reflect the individual brilliance of our students but also underscore the strength and excellence of our course and university. It demonstrates our commitment to nurturing talent and encouraging students to push boundaries, especially in STEM fields where diversity and inclusion are crucial.

Jarutas Andritsch, Lecturer in Computing and supervisor of the student's projects, says, “reflecting on the recent achievements of our students at the BCS Women Lovelace Colloquium fills me with immense pride and joy. This annual conference, dedicated to women and non-binary students in Computing and related subjects, provides a unique platform for showcasing innovative research and fostering a supportive community.

I am incredibly proud of our students for their perseverance and success. Their accomplishments inspire us all to strive for excellence and seize every opportunity to grow and challenge ourselves. This milestone is a reminder that with dedication and support, we can achieve great things and make significant contributions to the world of computing."
