This article explains the difference between counselling, support from our Mental Health Advisers, and the 24/7 helpline, so that you can find the right route first time.
If you would like counselling
Counselling is provided through PAM Wellness, our Student Assistance Programme (SAP). Counselling gives you a confidential space to talk to a trained counsellor about what you are going through, whether that is a specific difficulty or something more general affecting your wellbeing. Sessions can take place by telephone, video call, or face to face, depending on what is agreed with your counsellor.
You can self-refer directly, more information is available here.
If you need help with your mental health support at university
Our Mental Health Advisers (MHAs) are a University team. Their role is to help you find and access the right support, both within the University and from outside services, and to agree a plan that fits your situation.
For some students, this is a single conversation to signpost you to the right service. For others, an adviser stays in touch for longer, particularly if there is a wait before other support can start, or if difficulties are affecting your ability to continue with your studies and you need some interim support while things are arranged.
You can request a Mental Health Adviser at any point during your time at Solent, including before you start if you already have a diagnosis or an existing care plan. Advisers can also help you think through accessing support for alcohol or substance use, or domestic or sexual violence.
To request an appointment, submit a Care Report and state that you would like to speak with a Mental Health Adviser. If you are unable to complete the form, email wellbeing@solent.ac.uk.
If you need to talk to someone right now
PAM Wellness is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round, for support in the moment. You do not need to book an appointment or wait for a call back; you can call, use live chat, or access the app whenever you need to.
Call 0808 196 3533, or use the app or online portal (access code SOLENT1).
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, always call 999 first.
Not sure which to choose?
If you are unsure which route is right for you, choose either one. Both PAM Wellness and our Mental Health Advisers can point you towards the other if needed. You can also visit the Student Hub in the Spark for further information.
