Solent students take home the win at 48-hour film challenge

Celebrating 20 years, DVMISSION is the longest-running 48-hour film challenge in the UK. A film festival which screens and celebrates short films made in the two days before the event, it’s a unique opportunity for local filmmakers to show off their skills and network with regional industry. The best entries are awarded prizes, shining a spotlight on local filmmaking talent.

On the value of connecting students to this challenge, Solent’s Deputy Head of Film and Media (Research and Knowledge Exchange), Roy Hanney, says:

"DVMISSION is a window into the creative industries for students; it is often the first time they get to network with other creatives in an informal setting, and a first opportunity to get inducted into that community. It is also a chance to see how their creative work stands up alongside more experienced filmmakers."

This year, more than 30 teams took part, with three from Southampton Solent University. All three groups were nominated for prizes, showcasing the incredible talent among Solent’s creative students. BA (Hons) Film and Television student, Fergus Mclean, says:

“It’s great to be recognised for creative efforts in any capacity, and DVMISSION has been a really freeing experience. It’s refreshing to make something in such a short turnaround.”

Undergrads from BA (Hons) Film Production, Film and Television, Music Business and Media Production took part in the challenge, highlighting the collaborative nature of courses at Solent. Two of the groups came out victorious, winning Most Astonishing SFX, and Best Actor trophies.

BA (Hons) Media Production student, Jamie Randall, who took home Most Astonishing SFX, says:

“Taking home a trophy was rewarding because our competition was tough, and we were first time entrants. It proved that our practice in media production has given us a leg-up, and I really enjoyed the frenetic experience of producing a film with my friends!”
