Solent students take part in the Global Game Jam

The event took place between 20 and the 26 of January 2025, and a team of 9 students and graduates from Solent's Game Art, Design and Tech course worked for 48 hours on a first-person adventure game based on the theme ‘Bubbles’.

The game explores a desolated future world where the player must search for pieces of their rocket so they can escape to a nearby safe moon, but are only able to use their trusty bubble gun to navigate the treacherous landscape!

Now in its 16th year, the Global Game Jam drew over 35,371 Jammers from 97 countries and created over 12,098 games across the week. After a brief hiatus from the GGJ this was a triumphant return for Solent University’s development teams, and a return to form for the university’s game students.

Drew Cattanach Senior Lecturer on the Game Art course said: "The team did a great job to develop such an engaging and challenging game in such a short time."

Nick Hampton, Course Leader on the Game Design and Tech course said: "It is always so exciting to see our students enter these game jams and work together to create a compelling game entirely made by their own hands."

Gameplay programmer Vasco Almeida said that he would love to make this into a proper game, that's how fun it was!

Designer Luca Fregapane said: "It was a hard journey; we planned a massive scope. We cut a lot and managed to find the perfect solution to a fun game jam. As I always say, aim for the moon, and if you miss, you’ll land somewhere amongst the stars."

Designer Ian Ward said "The artists did a fantastic job and hard-carried this project."

Dust and Departure speedrun can be found here and the game can be downloaded from the Solent Global Game Jam site.

The team’s previous game Front Lines can also be purchased from Steam.
