Staying safe on a night out

8 October 2026

Starting university is an exciting time and exploring Southampton’s nightlife is all part of the experience!

Whether you’re heading out with flatmates or meeting new friends, a little planning can help you feel confident and stay safe while you enjoy yourself.

Top tips for a safe night out

  • Plan your journey home – Think ahead about how you’ll get back, whether that’s a taxi, bus, or walking with friends.
  • Stick together – Look out for each other and try to arrive and leave as a group.
  • Keep your phone charged – and share your location with someone you trust if needed.
  • Watch your drink – Never leave it unattended or accept drinks from strangers.
  • Trust your instincts – If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to leave or seek help.

Getting home safely

Southampton City Council operates a Safe Taxi Scheme, which helps you get home safely. If you’re walking, stick to well-lit, busy routes and avoid going alone late at night.

Support is here if you need it

If something happens or you feel unsafe, you’re not alone - support is available both on and off campus:

  • Student Hub and safeguarding team – confidential advice, guidance, and support.
  • Report + Support – report concerns or get help online through the Student Portal.
  • Personal safety advice – practical tips to help you stay safe.
  • Safe Places and venues – many local venues and services will help if you feel unsafe - just ask staff.
  • Hampshire Police – Ring 101 for non-emergencies.
  • Emergency services – Ring 999 if you are in immediate danger.

Look out for each other

A safe night out is a shared responsibility. Checking in on friends, stepping in if something doesn’t seem right, and knowing where to get help can make a real difference.

Enjoy everything Southampton has to offer but remember, your safety and wellbeing always come first.
