Supporting you with your attendance

29 October 2026

We hope you have all had a good start to the academic year, and that you are enjoying your studies so far. As we are now a few weeks into the Autumn term, we wanted to remind students of the importance of attending your studies and the support available if you are struggling.

The University expects you to attend all your timetabled teaching sessions. We monitor your attendance as we know that consistent attendance is closely linked to good academic performance, so it is in your best interests to attend each class if you want to be successful in your studies. We are also required to report student attendance to external bodies such as UK Visas and Immigration in respect to our overseas students.

If your attendance falls below certain levels, you will receive emails from us to ensure you are ok, and to ask whether you need any support with your studies. The University has a wide range of support services available and by monitoring attendance, we hope to be able to identify students who need support at an early stage. We can then discuss with you what sort of assistance might be the most appropriate and we can put this in place as soon as possible.

What support is available for me?

  • Student Hub – The first point of contact for any queries relating to your course or any personal matters which may be affecting your studies.
  • Student Funding – This team aims to help students with all matters relating to their student finance.
  • Disability Advice Team – Solent’s disability and neurodiversity advice service for students and staff supporting students.
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing – This team offer a variety of internal support such as mental health advice and social prescription.
  • Student Assistance Programme (SAP) – A complete support network including expert advice, compassionate guidance and counselling support - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

I’m going to be absent – what do I do?

We understand that sometimes you will not be able to attend your sessions. If you are going to be absent for 7 days or less, please submit an absence for your sessions via the Check-In app – click on the three lines at the top, click on ‘absence’ and follow the instructions.

For absences that are longer than 7 days, you will need to email check-in@solent.ac.uk and provide evidence as to why you are unable to attend your studies for a prolonged period. You can find more information on submitting absence requests on the student portal.

For more information on how your attendance is monitored at Solent, visit our portal page. If you have any questions at all, email check-in@solent.ac.uk and an adviser will get back to you.
