Bursaries available for local students

This year, thanks to the generous donations of external donors, bursaries of £1,000 are available for undergraduate students studying at Southampton Solent University.

The Local Student Bursary Scheme is entirely funded by alumni (former Solent students) and friends of Solent. Through their kind donations, we can support local students with their studies - with previous recipients utilising the funding to support with a variety of costs, including travel, equipment and subscriptions.

To be considered for a bursary you must be:

• A UK student.
• Enrolled on a full-time undergraduate degree.
• Prior to starting Solent, be from a UK 'SO' or 'PO' postcode or, in the last two years, have studied at a partner sixth form school or college.
• From a household income of less than £25,000 a year, as confirmed by Student Finance England as of Friday 16 January 2026.

Top tips for your application

If you are making an application here are three tips on how to make your application more likely to be successful:

1. Plan your application - Take time to complete the application and plan out your answers. Allow enough time to write a good application.
2. Provide detailed answers - The information you supply will be reviewed by the University’s Scholarships, Bursaries, Grants and Fees Governance Group and remember, they don’t know you! Rather than just stating ‘To purchase equipment’ provide context about what equipment you’ll purchase, why it’s needed and the difference it will make. We've created a guide to help you. 
3. Proofread your form - Before submitting, have another read through and check your presentation. Sometimes small typos can impact on the meaning of a sentence, so make sure it reads clearly.
