Students present innovative healthcare research to international conference in Oman

Five students from Southampton Solent University’s Department of Science and Engineering showcased their cutting-edge research to a global audience at the International Conference on Business, Communication and Technology (ICBCT) at Gulf College in Oman.

Bringing together global minds to discuss the latest developments in technology, business, and communication, the conference placed a strong emphasis on technological innovation in healthcare.

The postgraduate students, all studying Applied AI and Data Science, were invited to present their individual research projects that leverage machine learning and data analytics to address key challenges in the healthcare sector. Their presentations drew interest from academics, researchers, and professionals across multiple disciplines.

Utilising the latest AI capabilities and data sets, the students made the most of the work done as part of their course to present at the conference:

  • Abdul Mohammed used machine learning on the Framingham Heart Study dataset to predict cardiovascular disease risk, enabling earlier interventions.
  • Julie Lys analysed cancer survival trends in England, offering insights for improved healthcare policies and patient outcomes.
  • Machannagari Kethan Reddy applied predictive modelling to clinical data for better liver disease diagnosis using machine learning.
  • Sodiq Biodun Sulaimon developed an AI model to predict mortality in cardiovascular disease patients, supporting proactive care.
  • Swetangkumar Balvantbhai Patel created a classification model to distinguish liver disease types, aiding in treatment planning.

These projects are the result of extensive coursework and independent research, and reflect Solent University’s commitment to empowering students with practical, real-world skills.

Senior Lecturer, Dr Raza Husan, said:

“We are incredibly proud of our students. Their work exemplifies how Solent and its students are using academic research to directly contribute to global healthcare challenges. Presenting at an international forum like the ICBCT is a major achievement and a testament to the work of all those involved.”

By participating in the ICBCT, Solent’s students continue to showcase the power of global connectivity, building connections around the world.
