University strengthens community ties with AFC Totton

23 April 2025

Southampton Solent University proudly sponsored AFC Totton’s home game against Winchester City on Monday 21 April, marking the latest development in a growing partnership between the University and the football club.

The sponsorship reflects Solent’s ongoing commitment to supporting local sport, building on existing collaborations with Southampton FC and Hampshire Cricket Club.

As part of the matchday offering, final-year Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science students from Solent were on-site, offering free health check-ups to fans. The initiative provided valuable real-world experience for the students, echoing the hands-on work they regularly carry out at the University’s East Park Terrace campus.

Professor Cathy Barnes, Pro Vice-Chancellor at Solent University, said:

"This partnership is a great example of how we can bring real value to the local community while giving our students meaningful opportunities to apply their skills.

"Working alongside an ever-growing club like AFC Totton is a natural fit for us, and we’re excited to see how this relationship develops."

AFC Totton players also benefited from the partnership during the pre-season period, with access to Solent University’s state-of-the-art sports facilities to support their conditioning and performance.

Dominic Cunliffe, Head of Sport and Health added: "The pre-season sessions added great value for our students, not only by applying the theory into practice, but by giving them a sense that they had really helped to make a difference to the staff and players at AFC Totton.”

Both the University and the club are hopeful that this arrangement will continue ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Keely Ball, Marketing and Commercial Manager at AFC Totton, said:

"We’re thrilled to be working with Solent University. Their support not only helps enhance the fan experience but also brings a fresh energy to our club through student involvement and shared use of top-class facilities."

The collaboration underscores a shared vision between Solent and AFC Totton to promote health, education, and sport at all levels within the local community.
