Go Red for Heart Month

If you were faced with a cardiac emergency today, would you have the confidence to perform lifesaving CPR and operate a defibrillator?

Each year, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) declares February as National Heart Month in the UK. In 2025, Southampton Solent University is delighted to be collaborating again with the BHF to help raise awareness of their ground-breaking RevivR online training tool, offering students, staff and our alumni the opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to save a life when faced with someone who has collapsed and stops breathing.

RevivR is a free interactive online training tool, which teaches you how to recognise a cardiac arrest, what to do in an emergency and prepares you with what to expect with a simulated practise 999 call. It offers real-time feedback on your CPR technique and teaches you how to use a defibrillator.  All in 15 minutes! At the end of the training, you will be able to access a downloadable certificate for your personal records.

Research from the British Heart Foundation (April 2023) identified that:

  • Less than 10% of people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
  • An estimated 15% of cardiac arrests occur in the workplace.
  • Early CPR and defibrillation can more than double the chances of a person’s survival.
  • Sudden cardiac arrest is the main cause of death in young adults in the UK.

To access the RevivR training, please click on the link below with either a mobile phone, tablet or other devise which has a camera feature and follow the instructions on the screen.

Additionally, during Heart Month there will be a number of RevivR activities and pop-ups across the University campus to support students and staff in completing the training, delivered by our BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing RevivR facilitators. Details on these will be placed on the events section of the portal throughout February. If you would like to discuss a bespoke session as part of a department meeting, staff or student event or even within a course, please email mae.felongco@solent.ac.uk who would be delighted to organise this for you.

Do you know where defibrillators are located on campus?

Defibrillators can double the chances of survival from a cardiac arrest. It’s vital that students, staff, and visitors to our campus know where these are located. Please familiarise yourself with the below map.
