Shaping the future of maritime excellence

13 March 2025

At Solent, we’re very proud of the work we do to support the maritime industry in the Solent region, and the University’s contributions to this vital sector were recently highlighted in an exciting event that brought together key figures in maritime innovation and leadership.

Solent’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor James Knowles, and the Director of Warsash Maritime School, Kunal Anand, were invited to a special reception for HRH The Princess Royal at Portsmouth International Port, shining a spotlight on the region’s remarkable maritime cluster.

This high-profile event, which focused on the Solent’s role in UK trade, clean maritime innovation, and sustainable economic growth, showcased the pivotal role that Solent University and Warsash Maritime School play in the sector. The reception celebrated the continued strength of the region’s maritime industry and the collaborative efforts of organisations like Maritime UK Solent. Her Royal Highness expressed her continued support for Maritime UK’s cluster work, recognising its crucial role in fostering regional collaboration and bringing together all four corners of the United Kingdom.

Conversations on the day highlighted the critical role of collaboration in driving innovation, advancing sustainability, and developing the skills needed to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of the global maritime industry.

Warsash Maritime School is one of the leading institutions for maritime education in the UK, and the invitation to attend such a prestigious event is testament to the important role the School plays in shaping the future of the industry.

As part of the Maritime UK Solent board, Vice-Chancellor Professor James Knowles is deeply involved in advancing the sector and fostering regional collaboration, an endeavour that benefits Solent students and graduates.

Supporting the next generation of Maritime professionals

The event also provided an opportunity for Warsash Maritime School officer cadets to represent the institution and their sponsor companies. A number of cadets were also invited to attend the reception where they had the opportunity to network with industry leaders.

The cadets who attended were:

  • Christopher Davies (Warsash Maritime School)
  • Natalie Thompson (Warsash Maritime School)
  • Ethan Low (Watermark)
  • Phillip Wyatt (JBM)
  • Alex Thompson (JBM)

Strengthening industry links for career success

Solent University’s relationship with key maritime organizations, including Maritime UK Solent, strengthens its position as a leader in maritime education. The university’s unique position in this sector allows students to gain industry insight and hands-on experience that directly align with market demands. Through events like the Coastal Powerhouse Summit, which will take place later this month, Solent students and alumni are exposed to top-level discussions on maritime defence, trade, innovation, and sustainability.
