General campus emergency procedures

This information covers, First Aid assistance, what to do in the event of a fire or fire alarm sounding, and any other untoward occurrence.

First aid

If you or someone else suffers an injury while on the University campus and require first aid assistance you should call 023 8201 3700 from any phone to summon a member of our facilities team who are our nominated First Aiders. If you are using an internal landline dial 9 for an outside line.

When calling please ensure that you provide details of your location and remain there until one of our team reaches you.

If you are unable to reach someone on the above number and the injured person requires immediate assistance, please call 999 and provide them with the following:

  • your location. If you have the what3words app you can use this to determine your precise location
  • the number you are calling from, and
  • what has happened

Stay on the phone in case the 999 operator needs to ask you for more information, they will let you when they have all the information they need.

If you need more information about when to call 999 or 111 please visit the NHS website.

Reporting the incident

All incidents that do result in an injury, or could have resulted in an injury, must be recorded. This allows the circumstances leading to the incident to be investigated to ensure any remedial actions required to prevent a reoccurrence can be taken.

The accident and near miss reporting form can be completed by the attending first aider.

If no first aid assistance was required, or the injured person was cared for by anyone other than a member of the facilities team, the report should be completed by the injured person or the person's line manager/supervisor or course leader, as appropriate.

Even when no injury has occurred, any accident that could have resulted in an injury or damage to property should still be reported to prevent any similar incidents.

All completed reports should be sent to health.safety@solent.ac.uk.

Fire

If you are the person discovering a fire:

Raise the alarm by breaking the nearest fire call point, normally located by and entrance or exit or by shouting, "Fire, Fire, Fire".

If you are able, call 023 8201 3700, to contact the facilities team and provide them with the location of the fire and as much detail as possible.

If you are unable to reach anyone on the above number, call 999 or 112 to contact the Fire Brigade directly.

Leave the building by the nearest safe exit and make your way to the nearest assembly point.

Do not attempt the fight the fire with any extinguishers unless you have received training in how to use an extinguisher safely, are confident with their operation, and doing so will not put you in danger. Fire extinguishers are located near entrances/exits and are primarily supplied to aid escape from the building.

Fire alarms are tested on the main EPT campus every Tuesday between 7am and 9am. If the alarm sounds for longer than 30 seconds during this window, please assume this is an actual activation and evacuate the building.

On hearing a fire alarm

The weekly fire alarm test occurs each Tuesday. During the test the alarm will only sound for approximately 30 seconds to one minute. If the alarm sounds at any other time or continues for more than a minute you must evacuate the building.

Leave the building by the nearest safe exit and make your way to the nearest assembly point.

Remain there until advised by the Facilities Team that is it safe to re-enter the building.

For details of the assembly points locations please refer to the fire evacuation poster. Full details of the evacuation procedure can be found in the fire evacuation procedure document.

If you are unable to exit the building without assistance, i.e., you are a wheelchair user, you may require a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). If you believe you need a PEEP, you should contact the Access Solent Team by emailing disability@solent.ac.uk or visiting the Student Hub in TS114.

Untoward events and dangerous occurrences

Any event, incident, occurrence or accident which did or could have led to unintended personal injury or property damage should be reported using the accident and near miss reporting form. Once completed, the form should be emailed to health.safety@solent.ac.uk.

Even where no injury has been suffered, or property damage was avoided, being made aware of the incident will prompt an investigation which may lead to remedial actions to prevent a future re-occurrence with more severe consequences.

Emergency phone points

There are a number of emergency phone points at the East Park Terrace campus. These phones can be used to speak directly with staff who can quickly provide advice, support, or response in the case of a personal safety, fire or first aid emergency.
