Student achievement team

We're here to help you succeed

The student achievement team are here to support you throughout your time at Solent. Whether you're looking to improve your grades, understand your results, plan your final year, get back on track with your studies, or explore personal development opportunities, we're here to help.

We work closely with other student support and academic teams across the University to make sure you have access to the guidance, tools and opportunities you need to achieve your goals.

You can find more information and resources on our student achievement SOL page.

Solent Achievement Mentoring Scheme (SAMS)

The Solent Achievement Mentoring Scheme (SAMS) connects experienced students with newer students to provide peer support.

Through the scheme:

  • Level 5 students act as mentors for Level 4 students.
  • Mentors provide encouragement, guidance and general study support.
  • All mentors receive mentoring training before supporting other students.
  • Mentors and mentees can access resources through the SAMS SOL page and use the Vygo mentoring platform.

SAMS is a great opportunity to:

  • Build confidence and communication skills.
  • Gain valuable experience for your CV.
  • Support your wellbeing and sense of belonging.
  • Meet other students and expand your network.

Find out more on our mentoring SOL page.

GRIT workshops

GRIT workshops are designed to help you develop the confidence, resilience and leadership skills needed to succeed at university and beyond.

Resilience and confidence workshops

These workshops help you:

  • Build confidence and self-belief.
  • Develop resilience when facing challenges.
  • Make new connections and friendships.
  • Explore future opportunities and goals.

Leadership workshops

These workshops help you:

  • Develop leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Build meaningful connections with other students.
  • Better understand your strengths, values and potential.

Some leadership workshops are specifically designed for students from minoritised backgrounds, providing an inclusive space to build confidence, explore identity and develop leadership skills. The student achievement team and academic staff may invite students to participate in these opportunities throughout the academic year. For more information, please view the success workshops tab on our SOL page.

Check-In

The student achievement team oversee the attendance monitoring process for our standard taught students, using Check-In. We are here to help support any students who are experiencing issues with attending their timetabled sessions - if you receive an email from Check-In, please do get in touch via check-in@solent.ac.uk to discuss support available.

To find out more about attendance monitoring at Solent, please see the following portal pages:

Support and guidance

If you do not achieve enough credits to progress to the next level of your course, you may be required to complete outstanding modules through a repeat module year.

The student achievement team can help you understand what this means, what options are available to you, and where to access further support. For more information, visit the repeat modules section of our SOL page.

A trailing module is a module from a previous academic year that you have not yet passed but have been permitted to continue studying alongside your current modules.

If you have a trailing module, we can help you:

  • Understand your requirements and deadlines.
  • Manage your workload.
  • Develop a study plan.
  • Access relevant university support services.

Students with trailing modules may be contacted directly by the student achievement team with additional guidance. For more information, visit the trailing module section of our SOL page.

If you're in your final year, our degree calculators can help you understand what grades you may need to achieve your desired degree classification.

You can use the calculator to:

  • Explore different grade scenarios.
  • Set realistic goals.
  • Plan your final year effectively.
  • Identify areas where additional support may help.

Visit the degree calculators section of our SOL page to access the tools.

If you are returning to Solent after a period of suspension, the student achievement team can help you transition back into university life.

We can provide guidance and signpost you to support services that will help you successfully resume your studies. For more information, visit the returning from suspension section of our SOL page.

University terminology can sometimes be confusing.

If you've received assessment or progression results and are unsure what they mean, you can:

  • View the University's glossary of common terms.
  • Contact the student achievement team for personalised guidance and support.

We're happy to help explain academic terminology, progression decisions and degree classifications.

University life can be challenging, and it's normal to need support at times.

The student achievement team can help if you're experiencing difficulties such as:

  • Personal challenges affecting your studies.
  • Financial pressures.
  • Feeling isolated or struggling to settle in.
  • Concerns about whether your course is right for you.
  • Questions about attendance, engagement or academic expectations.
  • Missing an assessment or deadline.
  • Wanting to improve your grades.
  • Understanding course structure, credits, progression rules or degree classifications.

You don't need to wait for someone to contact you. If you're worried about any aspect of your studies, we encourage you to reach out as early as possible.

Asking for support is a positive step and an important part of succeeding at university.

The student achievement team may also contact students proactively. We use information such as attendance data and referrals from academic staff to identify students who may benefit from additional guidance and support.

To make sure we can contact you when needed, please:

  • Check your university email regularly.
  • Keep your mobile phone number up to date on your student record through the Portal.
