Equality and diversity

Southampton Solent University is an inclusive university with a rich and diverse student and staff community. We foster a culture which encourages all students to freely express their identity in a respectful and non-judgmental environment.

Students can seek support via the Student Hub for any questions or concerns.

The university has specific policies relating to:

  • Support for transgender, transitioning and gender-questioning students
  • Support for pregnant students and new parents

General equality and diversity helplines, online advice and contacts

Citizens' Advice Bureau 
The CAB offers advice on discrimination (as well as debt, benefits, employment, housing and many more issues). The national advice helpline is 08444 111 444.

The Southampton Citizens' Advice Bureau is located at 3 Kings Park Road, SO15 2AT and the telephone number is 023 8022 1406 or 023 8033 3868.

Equality and Human Rights Commission 
The EHRC helpline, 0845 604 6610, offers information and guidance on discrimination and human rights issues.

Directgov
You can phone helpline number 0845 604 6610 for advice if you think you are being discriminated against on the basis of any of the protected characteristics (race, sex, sexual orientation, disability, religion or belief, being a transsexual person, having just had a baby or being pregnant, being married or in a civil partnership, and age).

Samaritans 
A confidential emotional support service, available 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. Call 08457 90 90 90 or email jo@samaritans.org.

Women's Aid 
Free 24-hour national domestic violence helpline on 0808 2000 247.

Age UK
Phone the Age UK helpline on 0800 169 6565 or visit the website's helpline numbers page for a list of phone and web contacts for a range of ageing-related issues.

Mind - For Better Mental Health 
Mind provides two confidential mental health information helpline services. Phone 0300 123 3393 or email info@mind.org.uk for information on a range of topics including types of mental distress, where to get help, drug and alternative treatments and advocacy and for details of help and support in your own area. Phone Mind's Legal Advice Service on 0300 466 6463 or email legal@mind.org.uk for legal information and general advice on mental health-related law.

The East European Advice Centre (EEAC) 
A charity that provides advice and support to people from Eastern Europe. Offers English, Polish, and Russian languages. Phone 020 8741 1288 or email: info@eeac.org.uk.

Muslim Community Helpline 
A confidential, non-judgmental listening and emotional support service. Call 0208 904 8193 or 0208 908 6715. The service operates Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm.

Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) 
An independent national charity which exists to campaign for justice in immigration, nationality and refugee law and policy. Contact the JCWI on 020 7251 8708 or email info@jcwi.org.uk.

Scope 
Scope works with disabled people, of all ages, and their families, across England and Wales. For information on Scope's services, cerebral palsy or any aspect of living with a disability, you can contact Scope Response, which offers confidential advice (9am - 5pm on weekdays, closed weekends and Bank Holidays) on 0808 800 3333.

Mencap 
A charity working for people with learning difficulties. The helpline number is 0808 808 1111.
