Lost BRP card or passport?

Lost BRP card?

If you lose your passport or visa during this time, please follow the relevant guidance on how to replace your documents available on the UKCISA web site. The process is different for applications made inside and outside of the UK.

Card lost outside the UK

You will need to have your passport to apply for a replacement UK visa outside of the UK. For a replacement, please contact the embassy of your country. Once you submit an application for a replacement BRP card online, you automatically cancel the existing BRP card. The old visa cannot be re-activated if found and will need to be replaced before travelling.

Replacement visa application times vary considerably between countries so please ask for the estimated time before submitting your application. Premium applications are often available with a shorter turnaround time. On occasions, students prefer to return to their home country and apply for a replacement Tier 4 visa there.

On your return to the UK you will need to apply for a replacement BRP card within one month. We can help you with it - just book an appointment with our international student adviser by email: internationalsupport@solent.ac.uk

Cards lost in the UK

Try to locate your card before reporting is as lost or stolen to the Home Office online, as once it has been cancelled it cannot be reinstated.

It is a good idea to retrace your steps - think about where you have been and where you may have lost your BRP card - for example were you at the train station, in a shop, at university? If you had been travelling by train for example, it would be worth contacting the train station to see if your BRP card has been found and handed in - this is sometimes the case and would save you the job of applying and paying for a new one.

However, if you come to the conclusion that you will not be, or are unlikely to be, reunited with your BRP card, you should take the following steps:

  • Contact the local police station to report the loss of your BRP card (if you are unsure where the nearest police station is, we can help you with that).
  • Please also report your BRP card as lost on the Home Office website.

We can help you with the application for a replacement visa - you will need to book an appointment with our international student adviser by email: internationalsupport@solent.ac.uk

Before you attend your appointment with the international student adviser, it would be very useful for you to have made a start on the application. The link to the online application is here. We recommend that you try to complete it up to the 'Document' section. Then stop the application and you can finish the rest during your appointment with the international student adviser.

Please bring the following documents with you when you have your appointment, as you will need these to submit your application:

  • Proof of address letter (this can be a letter from your bank, utility bill, council tax bill)
  • Your Crime Reference Number from the Police (if you have one)
  • Your passport (if you have one)

During your appointment we will check your application and correct any mistakes before you submit it. If you would like, we can also act as the correspondence address, which will mean that your BRP card will be delivered to the University and you can collect it from the international student adviser.

Lost passport

As with the BRP card, if you feel that you have lost your passport, always try to locate it first before reporting it as lost. Again, retrace your steps, as there is a possibility that it may have been found and safely handed in somewhere for you to collect.

If it seems unlikely that you will be reunited with your passport, you should follow the following steps:

  • Report the loss to the local police station (we can help you find your nearest police station)
  • Contact your embassy for a replacement passport (all contact details should be found on your embassy’s website)
  • If you are outside of the UK, ask how long it may take for your replacement passport to be produced- if the waiting time is too long you may wish to discuss the option of obtaining travel document in a first instance.

Remember to show us your new BRP card or passport

If you have a new passport (due to replacement or because your old passport expired) or a new visa, which was not sent to the University, please email your new immigration document to: pbi@solent.ac.uk. Please scan the photo page of your new passport and please scan both the front and the back of your new BRP card.
